About The Department
The Massillon Parks & Recreation Department is your gateway to leisure and recreation. Serving the Western Stark County Community, the department offers an array of programs for residents and visitors alike. Program audiences range from pre-school, parent/child, and youth to adults and seniors.
The department maintains The Massillon Recreation Center, 30 parks and open spaces, The Senior Center of Massillon and the award winning, 27-hole golf course, The Legends of Massillon.
The Massillon Parks & Recreation Department was formed by combining the City of Massillon's Senior Center Department, the City's Parks Department and the Recreation Department which operated somewhat autonomously of the City with its primary funding through a Massillon City School property tax. Since this time, The Legends of Massillon Golf Course has also come under the umbrella of the Parks and Recreation Department in an effort to maximize the success potential of operation by providing additional management resources and oversight.
The department was created on January 1, 1996 with the passage of a 3/10 of 1% income tax by the citizens of Massillon in 1995. The dollars generated from this tax are designated to be spent for park andrecreation purposes. The Department falls under the City's organizational structure and also receives guidance and oversight by the Recreation Board. This policy making board is comprised of three members appointed by the Mayor and the other two by the Massillon School Board.
