Massillon Community Garden Coalition

The Massillon Community Gardens Coalition was formed by City of Massillon employees under the direction of Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry, along with volunteers from the Massillon Farmers Market, and the OSU Extension Office in October of 2014. The goal of this group is to assist with the food insecurity problem facing our city. Our purpose is TGIF - Teach Grow Inspire & Feed for a Sustainable Massillon.
As a collaborative partner in the Western Stark County sustainable food effort, we will work hand in hand with them to provide community education focused on food security and establish community gardens for the citizens of Massillon.
We have a commitment to our community with focused efforts on food access, community education, and economic development. Regional and community projects that will benefit from our partnership include the Stark County Farm to School Program, summer youth community garden based learning programs, and food support networks. Massillon Community Gardens will give area residents the opportunity to increase their access to healthy foods, engage in community education programs focused on food and nutrition, and create individual, cooperative, and community economic development opportunities.
The Massillon Community Garden Coalition helps support 4 community gardens where people can grow vegetables, herbs, fruit, and flowers for personal use. The gardens range in size, style, and function. Some of the gardens offer individual plots while others have shared plots. Some of the gardens supply fresh food for meal kitchens and local food pantries. Some of the gardens are educational and involve children and others mentor people of all abilities. Each garden is operated and maintained by committed volunteers and Master Gardeners through the OSU Extension Office. Massillon Community Gardens can be found all throughout Massillon on business property and in our city parks. Some gardens also offer programming for its participants. They are all places that beautify neighborhoods, inspire community development, foster good-neighbor relationships, and community pride.
